Selenium – A Powerful Anti Aging Mineral

By Dr Theodore | January 28, 2010

Selenium is one of the most important minerals for your health and for anti aging. It is however often over-looked by most people when it comes to taking supplements.  This mineral, like zinc, is essential for normal good health but is not made by your body: hence it must be consumed in your diet.

Sadly our foods are mostly mineral depleted, which leads to a chronic mineral deficiency of many minerals including the all important selenium. In my opinion this is a major cause of illness and disease. Low levels of selenium have been linked with all the major degenerative diseases and it is therefore critical that you consider supplementing your diet with this mineral.

Selenium can drastically lower your chances of developing many types of Cancer, including lung, colon, prostate and liver.

It also acts to help your body fight cancer by triggering apoptosis in cancer cells – this leads to death of the cancer cell. Selenium also cuts of blood supply to tumor tissue which stops growth and leads to tumor death.

A recent study also revealed how Selenium also lowers your risk of developing osteoarthritis. Researchers showed that the higher the levels of selenium in your blood, the lower your risk of developing osteoarthritis.

Selenium is one the most powerful antioxidants that you body can use and it provides strong protection for your bones, joints and cartilage tissues.

Selenium also reduces the risk of LDL Cholesterol (the bad one) from causing arterial damage. It therefore plays a large role in reducing your risk of developing heart disease.

So then how can you increase the levels of Selenium in your body?

The best dietary sources of selenium are red meats, fish and brazil nuts. Unfortunately there is very little selenium in fruits or vegetables: this is why vegetarians often have selenium deficiencies.

I recommend that for disease prevention you should take 100 micrograms of selenium every day, either from your diet or by supplementation. If you have any form of degenerative disease you can take 200 micrograms daily.

Don’t neglect the powerful positive effects selenium can have on your health: this mineral is a “must have” for anti aging and for good long term health. I make sure I take it daily, and so should you.
