Who Else Wants To “Feel Good”?

By Dr Theodore | July 8, 2010

In these modern times people seem to be relying on the so called “modern feel good” drugs called anti-depressants much more commonly that ever before to escape the stresses that life seems to bring. In this article I will look at the realities that these “feel good” drugs bring to your life, and explore if in fact they are beneficial to your overall health and well-being.

Anti Depressant Drugs – Cure or Curse?

Anti depressant drugs are some of the most widely used drugs in the world and it comes as no surprise why they are so commonly prescribed. The rates of depression, stress, anxiety and other psychological problems has been steadily rising over the last 10 years, and the standard medical practice is to prescribe a drug to “cure” these problems so that one can “feel good” again.

Sure counseling is also one of the remedies offered, however drugs are often the quickest solution to these problems as can be evidenced by the fact that from 1995 to 2005 the use of anti depressant medication has doubled and the use of psychotherapy or counseling has declined.

In the US over 10% of the population in 2005 was taking an anti depressant drug. This is staggering to say the least. Let’s just say that it seems the use of these drugs is here to stay. This is rather worrying for a number of reasons as I will explain below.

The other concern is the trend for medical professionals to add a second anti depressant drug to the person’s prescription if the first drug is not working. The addition of the second, or even third anti depressant drug is thought to be able to rectify the initial problem, however I believe it is merely making your overall health a whole lot worse.

When I was in practice in Australia in the early 90s it seemed like a lot of people where taking an anti depressant. However now instead of taking just one it is not uncommon for them to be taking two or even three. Combine this with the other prescription drugs that are routinely given, and you have a recipe for long term addictions and chronic dependence on drugs and doctors.

Now, since I focus completely on Anti Aging and natural medicine, and my aim is to wean people off of any unnecessary drug and to get their bodies and minds to a point where no drug is required in order to “feel good” mentally, physically and spiritually.

And my experience in natural health and preventative medicine has allowed me to invariably help people to completely transform themselves and to eliminate the need for anti depressant or any other drugs that are merely masking the underlying problem, as most drugs seem to do.

Your Body Is Never Drug Deficient!

You see all drugs are toxic substances to your body. Period! There is no synthetic drug that is or has been deficient in your body. However, your body can be deficient in any number of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, co-factors, essential fatty acids, hormones, oxygen, and water.

Deficiencies in any of these substances, or more commonly, in a combination of them, is the most likely cause of poor health, including psychiatric and physical illness and disease.

Synthetic drugs, like anti depressants, can certainly create an immediate impact by relieving some of the symptoms and signs of your problem, but invariably they are only acting to mask the real underlying cause of your issue. Often you will be reliant of these drugs in order to keep on masking your symptoms, and as is often the case, the initial drug will fail to be helpful after some time. This is when you will require either a higher dose, or another drug to try to alleviate your symptoms.

But this all comes at a price. For example, with anti depressant drugs there are a whole host of serious side effects that may occur when you take just 1 of these drugs. And if you are taking more than one, the side effects are magnified even further.

Some of the side effects from taking just one antidepressant are as follows:

So make sure you have a serious think before you choose to start these drugs. Yes it is your choice – don’t ever get pressured into starting any drug that has this many side effects and that you will be taking for a very long time without weighing up all the possible alternatives.

So what then are the alternatives that may well make you “feel good” without resorting to synthetic drugs? In my opinion they are:

1) Balance Your Hormones – there is no doubt in my mind that hormonal imbalance is directly linked to many health problems. Mental health is also directly linked to your hormones and countless studies have shown that if your hormones are out of balance your will more than likely suffer from psychological problems including: depression, mood swings, anxiety, It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman. Low testosterone levels lead to fatigue, low energy, and depression. Estrogen and progesterone imbalances can also create havoc on your mind and body. Thyroid and cortisol imbalances can also cause many of the above problems. Low growth hormone levels have also been linked with depression, fatigue and weakness.

Get your hormone levels tested using saliva hormone analysis, and if they are unbalanced you should seriously consider natural hormone replacement therapy immediately.

2) Balance Your Subconscious Mind – your mind affects your body, and without   clearing old negative and limiting emotions or beliefs, a calm and happy mental state is often impossible. German New Medicine has scientifically proved the link between the mind and body and has now revolutionized modern medicine. This now allows the subconscious mind to be explored and healed thus bringing a resolution to all sorts of mental and physical problems. Also meditation has also been shown to be a great calmer of the mind and is a must for anyone with mental problems.

3) Balance Your Body -Regular exercise is a very effective tension reliever and “feel  good” therapy. It takes your mind away from any stress that is bothering you and instead releases that stress and dissipates it. It also releases serotonin – the “feel good hormone”  in your brain. Yoga and Qigong are excellent forms of exercise that help strengthen your body and calm your mind at the same time.

4) Balance Your Diet – nutrition is critical to your overall health, especially your mental health. Your brain is largely made up of fats and a diet low in fat only creates an unstable brain. Include lots of good fats in your diet like fish, olive oil, nuts, avocados and eggs, and include healthy proteins containing amino acids, which feed the brain and regulate emotions. Avoid sugar, simple carbohydrates (white rice and bread etc), caffeine, and alcohol. They cause mood swings, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

5) Take Supplements - B vitamins are important as are minerals, especially magnesium which is a natural calming mineral. Also consider Omega-3 fatty acids such as fish or flax oils. These help stabilize your brain and help fight depression.

There are other actions you can take as well, which include a whole body detoxification which I think is an absolute must for anyone suffering any significant mental or physical problem as toxicity is a major cause of all such health issues.
